Condition: Fair. 1898. Second Edition. 650 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth covered boards with gilt lettering. Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout. End-papers are more notably foxed. Heavy cracking at the hinges with exposed binding material. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends, with fraying cloth and small splits. Gilt lettering has become dull. Book has a slight forward lean. Boards have minor damp and dust stains.

Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. Hardcover in acceptable condition. No jacket. Revised edition. Boards and spine are marked, worn and faded. Spine ends are bumped and nicked. Page block and pages are marked and tanned. Front pastedown hinge is split. Rear board is detached from page block but remains attached to spine. A few pages are creased. Text is clear throughout. HCW. Used.

Condition: Acceptable. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A readable copy. All pages and the cover are intact (dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but notes cannot obscure the text. A good hardcover reading copy without dustjacket. Spine covering is completely absent, although binding holds firm. Preface page is loose but not detached. Contents are tanned but unmarked.

Pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, with creased corners and foxing. Heavy cracking to hinges, with exposed netting and a loose binding. Boards have been heavily rub worn with heavy shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a heavily frayed and spine ends are crushed, with some small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. Hardcover in acceptable condition. No jacket. Boards and spine are marked and slightly faded. Leading corners and spine ends are bumped, worn and nicked. Page block and pages are marked and tanned. Pen on FEP and second contents page. Binding is exposed between a few pages and volume is cocked, but binding remains intact. Contents are clear throughout. HCW. Used.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 5th Edition, undated. Solid and square copy with no inscriptions or major marks. Corners of the boards are bumped but otherwise there is very little wear.

Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. Maroon cloth binding. Top page edge a little dusty, browning to endpapers. Good solid binding, very clean text throughout. An excellent example of the standard work of Greco, very scarce in this condition. From the private collection of David Miller, a long-standing member of the Metropolitan Chess Club, he also served as Club President from 1950-1956. Inscribed by Miller to half title page: 'D. Miller, 16 June 1916.' We have several other volumes from this collection, including prize volumes from the Metropolitan Club. Overall condition is Very Good Plus. Size: 4.25 x 6.25 inches (11.5 x 15 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: Small 8vo. xxiv, 246, [6] (ads).

Un-professional glue repair to gutter of front endsheets which have a Victor George magician bookplate. Original red cloth pictorial cloth covers. Lavishly illustrated with attractive b&w drawings. Striking pictorial endpapers with Sphinx motif. Chinese magician on front cover. some interior plates are in colour. Emphasis on stage magic including some illusions, magic fiction, and biographical profiles. This copy would be a good candidate for expert re-binding.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Professionally rebound in red cloth with gilt titles. Lacking original endpapers. New binding in fine, fresh condition, original text block is vg with some general edgewear and light soiling and title page has a 3" x 1/2" gash (paper loss) which does not affect text on the page, repaired with cello tape. On contents page is blindstamp owner's mark of Anton Weiland (who happens to be a contributor to the publication of an article about juggling which includes a mention of W.C. Fields contribution to the subject. Three card sleights of Dr. Elliott's are described and illustrated with four drawings. Professor Hoffmann writes a two page article about how he came to be involved in magic. The entire volume is lavishly illustrated with attractive b&w drawings and some photo reproductions. Emphasis of this publication is on stage magic including some illusions, and biographical profiles.

Not price-clipped, no jacket chips or significant tears. Book has no markings or bookplate. A curiously odd book which draws material from the victorian era author Professor Hoffmann (Angelo J. Lewis) and re organizes, re-formats, edits, and in most cases newly illustrates with b&w photos. This hardcover edition is considerably more elusive than the standard paperback version. In fact, at the time of listing, we could not locate a single example of the hardcover that was for sale.
