Ian Holbourn (1872 1935), born John Bernard Stoughton Holbourn, was laird of the northern Scottish island of Foula, a professor and lecturer for the University of Oxford, and a writer. He wasalso a survivor of the Lusitania disaster.

Author's inscription is on first front endpage: "[To] Lucy Wilcox In memory of certain lectures at the Southern Section of the University of California / from The Author / 4th of 8th of 18 Los Angeles." Author's autograph is also on the second front page. Deckle-edged pages are otherwise unmarked. Binding of all pages remains good although starting at hinge at second front page. Blue cloth cover shows some scratching and rubbing; stamped title on spine is faint but can still be made out. Very small chunk (size about 1/4 of a thumbnail) missing from from cover edge at top right front (inconsequential). Overall, this remains a good, sturdy copy of a very hard-to-find volume. Excellent older resource on the subject with useful line-drawn illustrations accompanying the detailed text. Signed.

Each writing is accompanied by an illustration. With contributions by Nellie Syrett, Cyril Goldie, Alfred Jones, and others.Profusely illustrated throughout. Collated. Seems to be lacking one plate to page 75. In the original publisher's cloth binding, with gilt to front board and spine.
