Johann Lavater (1741-1801) was a Swiss poet, writer, philosopher, physiognomist and Reformed theologian. This is his best known publication, first published in German between 1775 and 1778. It introduced the idea that physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types.
