Revised second edition (first published 1956). 90 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. Tan dust jacket toned, soiled, and stained with shallow chipping at spine and flap fold ends; short tear at spine head as well. Red boards with bright gilt stamped spine lettering. Light foxing to edges; slender stain at upper fore-edge with a few interior leaves affected at margins; a few other scattered stains and soiling to early pages; non-authorial gift inscription on front free endpaper; a few instances of unfortunate red ink underlining occur upon pages 9-11, 13, and 16 with no other such markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal. Binding is firm. A good copy in a good dust jacket. With Preface, two b/w illustrations amongst text, two unpaged leaves featuring two b/w plates and double-page (verso and recto) map, town chronology titled as "Some Notable Dates in Appleby's History," and Bibliography. Chapter titles as follows: "The Background of History," "The Rise of Appleby," "The Years of Prosperity," "Depressed Area," "Appleby in the 17th Century," "Appleby in the 18th Century," "From 1800 to the Present Day," "Appleby To-Day.".
