English edition, 1st printing, 282 pp. *** VG+ in G+ dust jacket. Holmboe attempted to drive an automobile across the northern Sahara, dressed as an Arab, from Morocco to Egypt. The car broke down along an uninhabited sea coast of Italian-occupied North Africa, and Holmboe and his companions were lost for ten days, suffering from thirst and other privations of the desert. While in what is now Libya Holmboe observed vast concentration camps of Bedouin Arabs, daily hangings, brutality, and was arrested by Italian authorities as a spy. A fascinating account of the old and the new in North Africa in the years just before the outbreak of World War II.
