There are official wars, with medals, maps, ministers and press briefings, and then there are the other kind: the ones conducted in shadows, denied in daylight, and later described in such careful language that the truth has to queue outside wearing a false moustache. War Without Honour is Fred Holroy…d?s account, written with Nick Burbridge, of military intelligence in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It is not a tidy regimental memoir in which chaps do difficult jobs, polish their boots, and emerge with a modest anecdote for the club. This is a book about the back rooms: informers, dirty tricks, rival agencies, secrecy, deniability, and the queasy little gap between what a state says it is doing and what some of its servants may be doing once the lights have been lowered. Holroyd was there as an intelligence officer, which is both the strength of the book and the reason it comes with its own atmosphere of tension. He is not writing from the visitor centre. He is writing from the unpleasant corridor behind the display boards, where the labels have fallen off and someone has decided the filing cabinet should remain locked for national security, public confidence, or because the contents would make an awful mess on the carpet. Northern Ireland in the 1970s hardly needed extra complications, but intelligence work has a genius for producing them anyway. In theory, it exists to bring clarity: who is doing what, where, for whom, and with whose weapons. In practice, clarity can become politically inconvenient, and the people tasked with finding the truth may discover that truth is welcome only if it arrives house-trained, useful, and unlikely to embarrass anyone above a certain rank. The book belongs to that grim British genre in which the words ?security,? ?oversight,? ?source,? ?operation,? and ?classified? begin to sound less like administrative necessities and more like curtains being drawn. Holroyd?s allegations sit in the murky territory of covert operations, collusion claims, propaganda, inter-agency rivalry and institutional self-protection. It is not comfortable reading, but then comfort is usually what official narratives are for. This is something rougher: a challenge, a dossier, a protest, and a refusal to let the public version sit undisturbed in its best suit. What gives War Without Honour its sting is the moral irony of the title. Honour is one of those words military institutions enjoy keeping polished on the mantelpiece. It looks splendid beside duty, service and sacrifice. But dirty wars have a way of testing whether such words are principles or merely decorations. Holroyd?s book asks the unpleasant question: what happens when the machinery meant to defend order begins to operate by methods that make order look like a costume? This 1989 Medium paperback is in Good condition, which feels apt for a book that was never likely to have a peaceful life on a shelf. It is readable, intact, and carrying the faint charge of a thing that would rather be argued with than admired. Crappy Old Books offers it for readers of the Troubles, military intelligence, political scandal, covert operations, and those cheery souls who hear ?nothing to see here? and immediately start looking under the floorboards.
