Condition: Very Good. Large 12mo (5 x 8 in. - 14.5 x 20.5 cm), 1883, red cloth with black and gold decoration and gilt lettering on the spine, 3 foldout lithographed maps at the rear, 361 pages with an additional 47 pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. With the Meiji restoration in 1868, Japan turned toward the West and began adapting western institutions and practices. The railway system was at the vanguard of the emerging "Victorian Japan." The Railway Bureau under the Ministry of Public works was charged with this effort. Edmund Gerald Holtham was a British civil engineer hired by the Railway Bureau to work on this project. He arrived in Japan in November 1873 and this his account of the eight years he spent in Japan. The book is a chronological blend of his work experiences and his personal travel and everyday living. The railroad line between Tokyo and Yokohama had been completed when Holtham arrived. He provides detailed accounts of the expansion of system to include Kobe to Osaka (by early 1874) and onto Kyoto (by 1876). Holtham also recounts a Westerner's view of the Great Rebellion of 1877. The book is not technically oriented. To the contrary, Holtham's focus is on the social and political aspects of his work as a civil engineer working for the Meiji government far more than the nuts an bolts of building and maintaining a railway system. He was a keen observer of Japanese life and the book records his day to day experiences and his extensive personal travels throughout Japan. ~ Condition. The book is in Very Good condition. The inside front and back hinges are cracked but the binding remains tight. Light foxing on edges and a few pages at the front and back. Cover has some fading and light rubbing. The fold out maps at the rear have misfolds but no tears or other faults. ~~ More information, to include digital pictures, available on request.

London 1883, Kegan Paul. Red decorated cloth, 360p., front cover faded, spine head mended, 3 large folding maps in fac- simile, back hinge mended, else complete, 13.5 x 20.5 cm., a solid copy. FIRST ORIGINAL EDITION The British author Edmund Gregory Holtham, was engaged by the Japanese Dept. of Public Works, as an early civil railroad engineer. . After the 1868 "Meiji Ishin" [Meiji Restoration] Japan acted upon its 'backward' condition when compared to the western & European worlds. The Meiji oligarchy, or new government, composed of Japan's intelligentsia, made major efforts to improve Japan to western high standards. To this end a large number of foreign "experts" from all disciplines came to Japan. These "experts" analyzed Japan's backward state, made postive recommendations and worked to create new institutions, infrastructure, business and government. Hundreds of these "experts" came to work and enjoy Japan. Off hours were spent in travel and other avocations. This book is an excellent primary example of how this person spent his off hours and vacation time investigating Japan. . Holtham spent his leisure time traveling throughout Japan, making notes, correcting maps and contributing his lucid anecdotes about all aspects of Japan and the Japanese. . His major contribution above and beyond railroad work was this fascinating book. This work outlines his travels in chronological time, covering a wide variety of topics and places. *** EXCELLENT PRIMARY RESOURCE ON DESCRIPTION OF JAPAN: . Because the author was a well-organized and well-trained engineer, he used his education and talents to organize and describe Japan in a friendly and delightful through manner. . Useful perspective on the Japanese the people, their customs attitudes, activities and peculiarities. He also comments on Japan's scenery and physical nature. . This work is the author's record of his eight years [1873- 1883], in an unspoiled Japan, where foreigners were truly an unusual phenomenon & not only shocked many rural Japanese, but it was their first time to even see a foreigner ! A true insight to Japan as it was before hoards of foreigners descended upon that country. . The three large folding maps are provided to illustrated the author's travel records and have been corrections of earlier maps based on the author's primary observations. . *** CHAPTERS: [We are using below the spelling the author used] . 1. Yokohama and Kobe 1873 . 2. Journey up country . 3. First year's work: Tsurga, Shiotsu, and Nagahama 1874 . 4. Second year's work: Akasaka, Nagoya 1875 . 5. Third year's work 1876 . 6. Completion of the Osaka-Kiyoto Railway, the Great . Rebellion of 1877 [see below for more on this] . 7. Holiday trip: Nikko, the Nakasendo road and Ise . 8. Osaka and Tokiyo 1877 . 9. Tokiyo 1877-8 . 10. Trip to Fuji-san [Mt. Fuji] and environs 1878 . 11. Tokiyo 1878-9 . 12. Journey in the North 1879 . 13. Tokiyo 1878-80 . 14. Tokiyo & Hakone 1880-1 . 15. Journey from Nagasaki to Kobe 1882. *** This is a fascinating narrative, easy to read, enjoyable and full of interesting things other foreigners of the period did not notice. Living and working for eight years gives the observer advantages short-time tourists never can notice or become aware of. Nicely done, a worthy early example. *** THE SATSUMA REBELLION: 1877 The Satsuma Rebellion [aka. Seinan Senso] was a revolt of disaffected against the new imperial government, nine years into the Meiji Era. Its name comes from Satsuma domain, which had been influential in the Restoration and became home to unemployed Samurai after military reforms rendered their status obsolete. The rebellion lasted from January 29, 1877, until September of that year, when it was decisively crushed and its leader, Saigo Takamori, ended his life. Saigo's rebellion was the last and most serious of a series of armed uprisings against the new government. See Wikipedia on this below. *** . REFERENCES: .
