Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 84 pp. with B/W reproductions of the sketchbooks on each page. Hand-written text transcribed in both Dutch and English. Usual ex-library markings with spine labels removed from cloth binding. Remnants of donation bookplate on first page. ?[In 1940,] Mondrian came to New York where he lived with delight and intense productivity until the end. It was during these last years in New York that Mondrian unpacked his sketchbooks and the very large charcoal drawings, based upon some of the sketches in the books, which he had kept rolled up for decades. The last years in New York, with the new paintings that were a radical synthesis evocative of all his previous experience, were those in which he reviewed again his entire past. This concern led him to extract a number of the drawings from the notebooks, which, together with some others of the ?Chrysanthemum? series, he mounted in a frame under one large glass. It was then that he signed and dated these works; several of the large charcoal drawings, which he mounted and framed; and a few of the early paintings around this period. ? The drawings in the notebooks interested Mondrian most. The writings interspersed bear very little or no direct relationship to them. Whatever correspondence their ideas had to his major development, they were later incorporated more coherently into the 12 chapters of his epochal series of essays in DE STIJL, 1917-18, beginning with its first issue ? Professor Welshs researches necessarily lead him here to some emphasis on Mondiran's Theosophical sympathies. . It seems proper to point out here that Mondrian never offered these notes for publication. Simply because there are no notes preserved between these and the much more complex writings in DE STIJL, it cannot be concluded that their contents formed the sole paths of his philosophical preoccupations of that time. But they are, as Professor Welch points out, the only written evidence of Mondrian thought between the early Cubist phase and the DE STIJL formulations. As a document having extraordinary character in Mondrian?s oeuvre, the drawings above all make most explicit the successive steps in the rapid transition towards his unique contribution.? - Preface. Oversized volume may require additional shipping.
