Decimus Junius Juvenalis and Aulus Persius Flaccus Translated and Illustrated As Well With Sculpture as Notes by Barten Holyday, D.D. and late Arch-Deacon of Oxan, 341 Pages, Over 30 Engraved Illustrations (Some Folding) and Many Woodcuts. Lacks Gg 4 (page 231/232), kk2 (page 251/252) , and Xx3 (page 341), which are all supplied in photocopy and bound into book. Book was rebound (by R.C.A.) in full leather with gold print on spine, raised bands, and 6 compartments, new endpapers were added at that time as well (1972) Overall book is in wonderful condition with a few smudges here and there and minor discoloration on some pages otherwise it is in great shape and has certainly survived time. Juvenalis (60?-140?) was a Roman Lawyer and Satirist of Roman vices under the Empire, Sixteen satires of his are extant. Beautiful illustrations as well.

Contains 16 satyres by Juvenalis, plus 6 satyres by Flaccus. The first combined edition of Juvenal & Persius in English. Holyday has provided copius notes. Edited by Holyday's step-son, W. Dewy. Includes one folding engraved plate (at page 72), three full-page engraved plates (pp. 47,127,210), circa 50 engraved illustrations and small woodcuts, plus several woodcut initial letters & headpieces. Though not credited, the text engravings are apparently mostly by David Loggan. With two title page vignettes. Includes Dedications & Preface to the Reader at front. First title page printed in black & red. Text printed in single & double column. Laid paper. Barten Holyday D.D. (& Late Arch-Deacon of Oxon) (1593-1661) was a theologian, dramatist, & translator. His translation of Persius's satires first appeared in 1616 (& was republished in 1617 & 1635), but this 1673 edition was the first appearance in English of his version of Juvenal (a posthumous edition), translated "line for line & contains voluminous notes". Large heavy folio volume. Bound in contemporary full leather, raised bands, gilt-lettered leather label to spine, small manuscript paper label to spine. NOTE: A FAIR to GOOD COPY ONLY. Recent ½ calf with marbled boards, spine in six compartments of raised gilt-lined bands and gilt floral motifs, gilt ochre morocco label on two, all edges tinted red, endpapers renewed. , Persius (or Aulus Persius Flaccus, AD 34-62) was a Roman satirical poet. A member of a distinguished family, he went to Rome in boyhood, was educated there and came under the influence of the Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Cornutus, to whom he became attached in lasting friendship. Gentle and modest by nature, Persius had high moral standards. His writings (only six short satires), influenced in manner by Horace and Lucilius, preach Stoic moral doctrine. He exposed to censure the corruption and folly of contemporary Roman life, contrasting it with the ideals of the Stoics and of earlier Rome. Persius? writing is harsh, obscure and difficult to translate. Decimus Junius Juvenalis was a Roman satirist who denounced the vice and folly of Roman society during the reign of the emperor Domitian (60-140). Like most ancient satire, the writings of Juvenal are essentially conservative. In order to avoid censorship he chose as his targets people who had lived a century before; but he clearly meant to describe what he saw as the faults of his own time. In his Third Satire he gives us a wonderfully intimate and lively portrait of daily life in the streets of imperial Rome. In the poem, a friend of Juvenal?s is moving to a place in the countryside, and it is he who details what he can?t stand about the city., Size : Tall 4to, Title printed in red and black and with publisher's device.
