Jahrhunderts zu den namhaften Opernkomponisten seiner Zeit. In die Musikgeschichte ging er vor allem durch die Oper Günther von Schwarzburg (1777) ein, die als erster Beitrag zur deutschen Nationaloper gilt. Ein Jahr nach der Uraufführung seiner Oper La morte di Didone (1779) komponierte er Der Tod der Dido als deutsche Textfassung von Metastasios Drama. Holzbauer war nicht nur ein Meister der Wortausdeutung und der musikalischen Seelenschilderung, sondern bemühte sich schon bereits seit Günther von Schwarzburg um die Annäherung von Rezitativ und Arie zugunsten eines ungestörten dramatischen Handlungsablaufs.; Kritisch kommentierte Ausgabe.
