This book is an alphabetical listing of over 500 railroads across the United States, from the Atlantic and St. Lawrence in Maine to the Western Vermont in Massachusetts. The author arranges the railroads by state and provides the names of directors, officers, conductors of freight and passenger trains, dates of charter, organization, commencement of operations and opening of roads, plus track mileage, capital invested, and equipment owned. Detailed tables show railcars arranged by state, giving a sense of the vast expanse of rail travel in the mid-19th century United States. The author's exhaustive research and attention to detail make this an invaluable tool for anyone interested in the history of American railroads. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Its pages contain professional science, technical advancements, and discussion of various matters connected with their professional duties. The author, drawing from many sources, provides a wealth of information. An examination of the survey of the coast under the laws of 1807-8, along with observations on the militia of the United States, are presented by the author with a view toward fostering serious reflection on the state of our country. The author is a believer in almost omnipotent power of education, but insists that it should be borne in mind that either of these qualities, according to their interpretation, or the direction given to them, may be a blessing or a curse to mankind. This book, part of a notable series, offers a comprehensive, detailed look at the political, economic, and social history of the United States from its inception as a tiny colonial outpost to its modern-day status as a global superpower. The writer's descriptive prose takes the reader on a dynamic, meticulously researched voyage, richly detailing the growth of American nationhood. The author adeptly connects the past to the present, examining the processes that shaped the American experience: hardship endured by pioneering settlers, political maneuvering to create a new government, adaptation to sweeping technological and industrial change, and the trials and tribulations of a young nation questing for identity and purpose in the face of internal conflict and external threats. This book is a consummate achievement in historical fiction, a must-read for scholars and the general public alike, providing an indispensable framework for comprehending the American story from its inception to the present day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Condition: Good. 8vo. Original wraps. 12.5 x 21cm. 12pp. plus 3 folding charts. [13th Cong., 3d sess. House doc.], 33.OCLC 29139384.Patrick Magruder (1768-1819) was the second Librarian of Congress and served in that capacity from 1807-1815. He served both as the Clerk of the House and as Librarian of Congress as had his predecessor. Magruder had the misfortune of serving in those capacities at the time the Capitol of the United States was burned by the British during the War of 1812. At the time of the burning of the Capitol in August of 1814 Magruder was absent from Washington, D.C. for health reasons. .He left the Office of the House and the Library of Congress in the charge of his brother George Magruder and two assistants. In addition to the books in the Library of Congress Patrick Magruder's office records which included the financial records of the House of Representative were destroyed. A Congressional investigation into Magruder's handling of Congressional funds found discrepancies including a shortage of $20,000. .Although Magruder managed to avoid prosecution for his actions, he resigned on January 28, 1815. I have in my collection an 1814 government publication which contains a letter from Patrick Magruder to the Speaker of the House in defense of his actions which in turn includes an account by two office assistants of the events leading to the destruction of the Office of the House and the Library of Congress. Their account says in part, "every thing belonging to the office, together with the library of congress, we venture to say, might have been removed in time, if carriages could have been procured, but it was altogether impossible to procure them, either for hire or by force." After Magruder's resignation the positions of Clerk of the House and Librarian of Congress were separated. different broadside from Marshall. From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.
