Only slightly ex-library with an attractive library Civil War collection bookplate on front pastedown endpaper and another stamp with less but similar information on cover page. Toledo publisher's label pasted on title page, over original name of publisher. OCLC notes only four copies in the US by this pubisher. 502 p. with all illustrations and maps. A standard, attractively bound, and popular biography of General Winfield Scott Hancock, one of the best commanders in the Union army during the Civil War. The book itself may have been printed at one location and shipped across the country where other publishers added their label, as copies mention publishers in in Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Chicago and elsewhere.

Blue cloth over boards with ornate black illustrations and gilt embossed titling to spine, ornate gilt and black embossed title design in black rule to front board, and debossed rule to rear board. Light foxing to flyleaf and previous owner's inscription to front flyleaf. Pages have creasing to top edge of pages 136-260, and foxing to margins of a couple pages throughout. Front inner hinge cracked, but still holds. Text block is sunned particularly to top edge, moderate foxing to lower edge, and indented circular scuffing to top edge. Boards have moderate soiling particularly to edges, dampstain to lower edge of front board, and light crease down center of spine; cracking to cloth along spine edge with slight visible fraying. Heavy bumping and rubbing to corners and ends of spine. Binding is sound, boards are slightly bowed.
