Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Jacket by Philip Hood (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, IN BLACK PEN, WITHOUT DEDICATION, ON TITLE PAGE. Soime very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, slight yellowing to page block, not price clipped (£10.00), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 298pp. Not many men emerged from Trafalgar without an ounce of credit to their names, but courtesy of an over fondness for rum and his habitual bad luck, Lieutenant Martin Jerrold managed it. In February 1806, he is given one final chance to redeem his reputation and dispatched to Dover. Things don't augur well when, walking off the effects of a night in the tavern, Jerrold stumbles across a corpse lying on the beach. And they take a distinct turn for the worst when, to his horror and bemusement, he is suspected of murder. With a captain who despises him, and the local magistrate determined to see him hang, he knows clearing his name will require an improbable reversal of his miserable fortunes. Somewhere in Dover's twisted streets, someone must know something. But Jerrold soon discovers that nothing is as it seems in a town where smuggling is a way of life, where everyone from the fishermen to the colonel of dragoons drinks only the finest French brandy. Distrusted by his superiors, set upon by suspiciously well informed thugs and attacked by the French at sea, Jerrold does find some sympathy in the less than respectable arms of the comely Isobel, but he knows he has but two weeks to save his skin or perish in the attempt. The author's debut full length novel. Signed by Author(s).

The binding is slightly rubbed to the edges, with slight cracking to the bottom edge of the spine. but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is signed "Bound for George Rutland, Newcastle, Upon Tyne" We cannot find a binder of this name, but there was a publisher of (primarily) angling and fishing books based in Newcastle in this period, so it is presumably done for him. Manuscript. Condition: Poor. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. On offer is a testament to true love on Valentine's Day in the late 19th century. This 14 line sonnet was handwritten by an unknown transcriptionist, presumably for his Valentine. He has written out British poet Thomas Hood's (1799-1845) Sonnet for the 14th of February, in a lovely cursive hand. He has dated the poem, February 14, 1893. Our transcriptionist has made some changes to personalize the poem, such as changing the phrase "And to his mistress dear his hopes convey" to "And to his dearest one his hopes convey" (Line 5). The poem is credited to "Tom Hood (modified) " and signed with the initials FHI. This poem's biggest flaw is one of its greatest assets. It is clear from the way the piece of paper has ripped at all of its fold lines, that the recipient of this poem kept it near and dear for a great many years. The paper on which the poem is written is in very poor condition. It has been taped back together with clear tape, many years ago. The tape has browned and become one with the paper. Sadly the way it was taped horizontally has obscured lines 3 and 13. The remainder of the poem is very legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author.
