Rare 1701 edition of Phaedri Aug. liberti Fabularum Aesopiarum libri V (various fables) by Phaedrus (c. 15 BC - c. AD 50). Phaedrus was a Roman fabulist who is recognized as the first writer to Latinize entire books of fables, using the iambic metre Greek prose of the Aesop tales. Illustrated with 18 full-page and 38 in-text reproductions of copper-engravings by Jan van Vianen (1660-1703), illustrated decorative initials, as well as many head- and tailpieces. One fold-out engraving with a portrait of Joannes Gulielmus. Fold-out with three small closed tears on edges, six-inch tear expertly repaired affecting image, 1/4" x 7" strip on lower right edge of margin missing. Boards detached, almost all pages disbound but complete. Spine missing. Leaf following title-page expertly repaired. Heavy age wear, abrasions and staining on boards. Some age toning and sporadic foxing throughout. Plates in overall very good, otherwise book in poor condition. As is.

Auf stärkerem Papier gedruckt. Mit einigen in Kupfer gestochenen Vignetten im Text und mit 18 in Kupfer gestochenen Tafeln mit jeweils 6 Darstellungen im Rund. Original-Leder mit mamoriertem Buchschnitt, 4° ( 26 x 19,5 cm ). Der Einband leider von sehr schlechter Erhaltung: Stark berieben, Ecken und Kanten sind bestoßen, der Vorderdeckel mit kleiner Fehlstelle am Unterrand. Der schmale Einbandrücken ist abgeplatzt und großenteils fehlend, Bindung ist defekt, Vorderdeckel ist lose. Innen der Innendeckel und das vordere Vorsatzblatt mit kleiner handschriftlicher Notiz von alter Hand sowie stärker fleckig, das schöne Frontispizkupfer etwas fleckig, Seiten teils gering fleckig, wenige Seiten auch stärker. Hinten einige Seiten mit kleinem Tintenfleck am Buchschnitt, letzte Seiten etwas eselsohrig zur unteren rechten Ecke hin. Das hintere Vorsatzblatt fehlt. Die gestochenen Vignette und die schönen Kupfertafeln von insgesamt guter Erhaltung, nur wenige sind gering am Außenrand fleckig bzw. gering stockfleckig.( Bitte beachten: Der Einband ist beschädigt ). Printed on stronger paper. With some copper engraved vignettes in the text and with 18 copper engraved plates with 6 illustrations each in the round. Original leather with marbled edges, 4° ( 26 x 19.5 cm ). The binding unfortunately in very poor condition: heavily rubbed, corners and edges bumped, the front cover with a small loss at the lower edge. The narrow spine is chipped and largely missing, the binding is defective, the front cover is loose. Inside the inner cover and the front endpaper with a small handwritten note in an old hand and more heavily stained, the beautiful frontispiece copper somewhat stained, some pages slightly stained, a few pages more so. A few pages at the back with a small ink stain at the edge, last pages somewhat dog-eared towards the lower right corner. The rear flyleaf is missing. The engraved vignette and the beautiful copper plates in good overall condition, only a few are slightly stained or slightly foxed in the outer margin (please note: the binding is damaged). Imprimé sur papier épais. Avec quelques vignettes gravées sur cuivre dans le texte et 18 gravures sur cuivre, chacune avec 6 illustrations disposées en cercle. Reliure d'origine en cuir à tranches marbrées, in-4 (26 x 19,5 cm). La reliure est malheureusement en très mauvais état : fortement frottée, coins et bords abîmés, le plat supérieur présente une petite déchirure en bas. Le dos étroit est abîmé et en grande partie manquant, la reliure est défectueuse et le plat supérieur est détaché. À l'intérieur, la première page de garde et le plat inférieur comportent une petite note manuscrite d'une écriture ancienne et sont plus fortement tachés ; La magnifique gravure du frontispice est légèrement tachée; certaines pages sont légèrement tachées, d'autres plus fortement. Au dos, quelques pages présentent une petite tache d'encre sur la tranche; les dernières pages sont légèrement cornées dans le coin inférieur droit. La page de garde arrière est manquante. La vignette gravée et les superbes gravures sur cuivre sont en bon état général; seules quelques-unes présentent de légères taches ou rousseurs sur les bords. (Remarque: la reliure est abîmée.) Bella e solida legatura olandese dell' epoca in piena pergamena rigida con laccetti passanti, autore e titolo manoscritti sul dorso da mano coeva. Tagli spruzzati rossi. Splendido antiporta inciso da Pieter Balthasar Boutats su disegno di Jan Goeree con piccolo ritratto del dedicatario dell' opera Johan Willem Friso. Con 18 tavole fuori testo incise a p.p. Frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero con bella vignetta allegorica centrale incisa, 6 testatine, 32 culs-de-lampe di grandi dimensioni, 9 grandi capolettera illustrati, il tutto, tranne l' antiporta, disegnato ed inciso su rame da Jan Van Vianen. Contiene, all' inizio, la vita di Fedro di Johann Scheffe. Esemplare fresco e genuino in ottimo stato di conservazione. Prima edizione in prima tiratura, stampata su carta forte, delle favole di Esopo riscritte da Fedro, qui curata filologicamente e annotata da David Van Hoogstraten, una delle più belle e raffinate edizioni mai impresse. Il superbo corredo iconografico, l' ha fatta includere anche fra i libri d' emblemi e di simboli; ogni tavola, incisa su rame da Jan Van Vianen, contiene 6 medaglioni, 108 in totale, raffiguranti scene delle varie favole di Fedro, spesso con una seconda scena che si svolge sullo sfondo. Il libro fu realizzato appositamente per il Principe Delfino Giovanni Guglielmo Friso di Orange-Nassau, che all' epoca aveva 14 anni. Dibdin ne parlò molto bene nei suoi Classici Greci e Latini: "I have always considered this as a correct and very sumptuous edition. It is ornamented with a great number of small plates, or medallions, in which the subject of the fable is very ably and spiritedly executed. The type is peculiarly rich and bold, and is hardly equaled by any Dutch edition of a classic.".
