Charles Francis Adams, III [1866-1954] was a member of the prominent Adams family, the great-grandson of President John Quincy Adams and the great-great grandson of the second U.S. President John Adams. After graduating from Harvard Law School and being admitted to the Bar in 1893, Adams held the office of Mayor of Quincy, Massachusetts from 1896-1897. In 1917 he was elected as a member of the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention. From 1929 until his retirement in 1933 Adams served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President Herbert Hoover. While in office he vigorously promoted public understanding of the Navy's indispensable role in international affairs and worked strenuously to maintain naval strength and efficiency during a period of severe economic depression. Adams was a well-known yachtsman and was posthumously inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1993.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Full-page typed letter signed by Herbert Hoover tipped in. Copy of George A. Zabriskie (his bookplate is tipped in on front pastedown: "Ex Libris Geo. A. Zabriskie). Original publisher's dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Blind-stamped (likely formerly gilt) lettering on spine. 5" x 7 1/4." Seventy-two pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for some loosening along gutters, light age toning and some tiny chips and moderate bumping along some of the page edges. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate fading and age toning, some cracking and splitting along front and back inner hinges and outer joints, small dampstain on back, spinal lettering being rubbed off, rubbing and fading to lettering on front, and slight wear to extremities. Binding is still strong and holding. A Very Good copy. A philosophical treatise about "American individualism" by Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States. Hoover defends American individualism and writes about its different philosophical, spiritual, economic, and political aspects. For example, when speaking of the economics of American individualism, Hoover appears to promote capitalism and says that this economic school is a primary attribute of said individualism. He suggests that capitalism and individualism help foster leadership. Hoover also argues that private property is beneficial to the American individual because it cultivates spiritual aspects within them such as ambition and the desire to be industrious (so they may gain private property). Interwoven in his discussion are contemporary political and social matters such as war, temperance, and Prohibition. This particular copy belonged to George A. Zabriskie (1868-1954), President of the U.S. Sugar Association who was also appointed by Hoover as the national administrator of sugar and flour. Of additional historical interest is a typed one-page typed letter tipped in the front that was addressed to Zabriskie from Herbert Hoover. The letter is typed on Secretary of Commerce stationery. It is signed by Hoover in black ink at the bottom as "Herbert Hoover." The letter consists of four brief paragraphs. In his letter, Hoover asks Zabriskie if he would be willing to serve on an arbitrary Committee that would act as an intermediary between interests representing the Cottonseed Oil Exchange in New York and interests who are representing "cottonseed crushers" (who are likely antitrust groups). The antitrust groups and the Exchange had been in conflict for some time, and Hoover informs that while Senator Mayfield has introduced regulatory measures to help resolve the issue, the two interests need a mediator to help negotiate a futures contract. Hoover writes to Zabriskie that he would like for him to serve on the Committee because he is not associated with cottonseed interests, has business experience, and has experience with futures selling. The memoir of Dr. Esther Lovejoy, describing her experiences in the Paris factory district of Levallois in the winter of 1917-1918, during the First World War, working at the Residence Sociale, known to the locals as The House of the Good Neighbor. This charitable ''social house'' had as its mission the care of the children of women who worked in the factories, poor families, and other disadvantaged individuals, including young women and the elderly. It also functioned as ''a clearing house for people in distress, giving immediate help in emergencies, and cooperating with other agencies and organizations for the relief of human suffering. It was in touch with hospitals, dispensaries, maternities, pre-natal and post-natal homes, creeches, canteens, milk and supply depots of different kinds.'' Lovejoy goes into great detail about the life and work at the House, and the prevailing social conditions which necessitated these specific relief efforts, as well has her philosophy and views on this charitable work. Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967) was an American physician and public health pioneer, and a suffrage activist. In 1907, she became the first woman appointed to direct a department of health in a major U.S city (Portland, Oregon). She was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School, and the first to practice medicine. Later in life, in 1951 and 1957, she was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal by the American Medical Women's Association in for contributions to the field of medicine. Signed by Author(s).
