The entire text plus all the illustrations are engraved by Pine on copper plates. There are title vignettes, eight full page illustrations, culs-de-lampe and four line opening initial to each poem. Pine used imagery of classical seals, paintings and sculpture for the more than 324 illustrations and vignettes. BRUNET III, p.320 "remarquable par l'elegancce des ornements." GORDON N. RAY. p.3 notes, "Pine's complete command of his craft makes this the most elegant of English eighteenth-century books in which text and illustrations alike are entirely engraved." Both volumes are lavishly illustrated with engravings throughout, including frontispieces and title page vignettes, full page illustrations, numerous pictorial head & tailpieces (including a couple of maps) and decorative initials;First Edition, first issue, with the misprint 'post est'in the medallion of Caesar on p. 108, Volume II. This copy CONTAINS THE SELDOM SEEN LIST OF ANTIQUITIES IN VOLUME I. very few copies were bound with this list which makes this set particularly desirable. Pine's edition of the works of Horace, for which he engraved both the text and illustrations, is considered a masterpiece of 18th century book art. The numerous subscribers for the edition included royalty and nobility (the Prince of Wales, the Holy Roman Emperor, the King and Queen of Spain, the Prince of Orange, several Dukes and Earls), Edmund Halley, George Frederic Handel, Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole, Jonathan Swift, Richard Sheridan, and William Hogarth. Housed in a beautiful quarter-morocco clamshell case courtesy of the Heritage Bindery.

Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 1733, 1737. Two volumes. First edition, first issue with "post est" error in the Caesar medallion on page 108 of Volume II. In a lavish full brown morocco binding with five raised bands and ornate gilt stamping to spine, borders on covers, wide turn-ins and beautifully patterned endsheets; all edges gilt. Near Fine, with a light amount of rubbing to joints, spines lightly faded, a scuff to the front cover of Volume II and small former owner bookplates of noted collector Abel E. Berland to the front pastedowns. Pine's Latin text was based on Talbot's 1699 edition, and is remarkable for being entirely illustrated with engraved copper plates throughout the text.
