John Pierpont Morgan Sr. (1837 - 1913) was an American financier and investment banker who dominated corporate finance on Wall Street throughout the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. As the head of the banking firm that ultimately became known as JPMorgan Chase & Co., he was a driving force behind the wave of industrial consolidations in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. As early as 1890 Morgan had begun to assemble a collection of illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints. This great codex is one of the chief monuments of mediaeval Latin calligraphy. Abbot Gasquet, in preparing for the Benedictine revision of the Vulgate with which he has been charged, asked Mr. Hoskier to examine the Morgan gospels, and Mr. Hoskier consequently published an account and collation of the manuscript for Mr. Morgan. Presented and signed for J.P. Morgan! RAREA1910DSTP - 11/25 - HK2912.
