First and only edition of an account of the ceremonies and festivities held on the occasion of the installation of William III, Prince of Orange (1650-1702), as First Nobleman (le premier noble) of the province of Zeeland. The work is exceptionally rare, as we have only been able to trace four copies in institutions, and none in sales records. The present copy has been beautifully bound by the celebrated French bookbinder Joseph Thouvenin the Elder (1790-1834).Prince William III was the great-grandson and last descendant of "the Father of the Fatherland" and founder of the Dutch Republic, William of Orange. He would later become Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic (1672) and King of England (1689). The festivities surrounding his installation in Zeeland, three weeks before his 18th birthday, had a great symbolic value. Following the death of his father, William II, in 1650, the office of Stadtholder remained vacant, giving rise to a prolonged political debate over whether the Republic would be better governed without a Stadtholder. The fact the Province of Zeeland was willing to receive William III as their first Nobleman, meant that the Province was also willing to accept him in the near future as the new Stadholder.The publisher and place of publication are not mentioned on the title page. However, Willems has included the work in his bibliography of Elzevier imprints. The woodcut vignette on the title page has been identified by Rahir as one used by the Amsterdam publisher Abraham Wolfgang (1634-1694), who occasionally printed for Daniël Elzevier (1626-1680).The present work consists of six separate pieces: a letter by "Philogyton" describing the events; a letter addressed to William's mother, the Princess of Orange, offering a detailed account of the Prince's reception in Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, on 18-19 September 1668; a continuation covering the period from 19 to 25 September, including reports of visits to Middelburg, Vlissingen, with its celebrated shipyards, and Veere, all marked by fireworks and public festivities attended by enthusiastic crowds welcoming the young Prince; the formal address delivered by William III to the States of Zeeland in Middelburg on 19 September 1668; the oration presented to William III by the minister Johannes de Mey on behalf of the States of Zeeland, concluding with citations from the Bible as well as from Plutarch and Plato; and finally, a Latin panegyric poem on the Prince's reception in Zeeland on 19 September 1668, signed "Hortensius" and bearing the motto "Tandem fit surculus arbor".With the bookplate of Comte H. de la Bédoyère mounted on the front pastedown, from the library of the famous Flemish collector and man of letters Alphonse Willems (Cat. de 1914, nr. 581), a paper label with a manuscript description about the work tipped onto the front wrapper. The boards are slightly scratched, the joints are weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The leaves are uncut, the work is lightly browned throughout.
