Seller: Antique Mall Books, Smyrna, GA, U.S.A.
Hardback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition - Stated (Infantry Journal - 1950). VERY GOOD, no dust jacket. No marks in text, Light wear on cover with sunned spine. 325 pages illustrations 29 cm. . . . . . . A narrative unit history that reads much like an official regimental chronicle expanded to divisional scale, with a straightforward, documentary tone rather than a memoirist or literary one. Conner writes in clear, serviceable prose, emphasizing chronology, operations, and organization, and he leans heavily on orders, after-action reports, and staff perspectives to build his story of the division from activation through combat and occupation. The opening chapters, such as *Forging the Spearhead,* move methodically through the division's creation at Camp Pendleton and Camp Tarawa, describing training, unit formation, and command changes in an almost report-like style that occasionally breaks into brief set-piece descriptions of field exercises or camp life. As the book turns to Iwo Jima, the tone remains controlled and factual, but the pacing tightens: days and even hours are ticked off as Conner follows the landings, the struggle for Suribachi, and the successive drives north, using frequent references to specific regiments, battalions, and objectives (O-2, O-3, final pockets) that give the text a staff-officer flavor. Throughout, his narrative voice is respectful and commemorative, but not florid; he highlights sacrifice, casualties, and decorations in a restrained way, often grouping individual heroism into short vignettes embedded in the larger operational story rather than lingering on extended personal reminiscences. The book covers with the return to Hawaii and the occupation of Japan and closes with appendices on casualties, awards, and unit rosters that reinforce the work's character as an official record as much as a readable history.
