Hardback. Condition: Fair. The great age of European ceramic design began around 1500 and ended in the early nineteenth century with the introduction of large-scale production of ceramics. This beautiful book is the first complete history of European ceramic design and decoration during this period, presenting it not only in art-historical terms but also in the context of the era's social, cultural, economic and scientific developments. Howard Coutts considers the main stylistic trends - Renaissance, Mannerism, Oriental, Rococo and Neoclassicism - as they were represented in such products as Italian Maiolica, Dutch Delftware, Meissen and Sevres porcelain, Staffordshire, and Wedgwood pottery. He pays close attention to changes in eating habits over the period, particularly the layout of a formal dinner. And he discusses such fascinating topics as the development of ceramics as room decoration, the transmission of images via prints, fashion and marketing of ceramics and other luxury goods, and the intellectual background to Neo-Classicism. Comprehensive, engrossing, and lavishly illustrated, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in ceramics and their history. …

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Included. English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 2.1 kg.; 24 x 28.5 cm.; 389 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket shows wear marks, edge wear, scuffs and scratches; tear at the bottom of the spine; the top and bottom of the spine is worn. The exterior hardcover is worn at the edges and has a bump at bottom of the front cover (only seem if the dust jacket is removed). Interior with minor signs of wear.; Comprising some 400 pieces of the finest Bow, Chelsea, Derby and Worcester porcelain, with fine examples from other factories, The Lady Ludlow Collection of English Porcelain is first and foremost one of the greatest assemblages of 18th-century English porcelain in existence, with early-19th- century additions. Although collected between the two world wars, it reflects an Edwardian taste for lavishness and represents the fruits of the unrivalled buying opportunities enjoyed by collectors in what may now be seen as a time of plenty. When the collection was gifted by the Art Fund to The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham, in 2003, the Museum already housed one of the most important collections of fine and decorative art in the United Kingdom and had been 'designated' in 1997 by central government for its quality. The Museum was purpose-built in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes who collected most of their paintings, textiles, furniture, pottery and porcelain in Paris including French faïence and soft-paste porcelain. Additions to their own collection include the collections of John Bowes' cousin, Susan Davidson (mostly Oriental export porcelain) and Enid Goldblatt (mostly Continental porcelain). Lady Ludlow published a catalogue of her collection in 1932, but this has long been out of print, and also out of date, as she both added and disposed of items after its publication. This new colour-illustrated catalogue of the whole collection, with an introduction to the collector herself, is a most valuable source of reference for porcelain collectors and all who wish to study and compare the finer points of English porcelain at its very highest level of design and workmanship.; The book includes: Complete description of every piece with measurements and provenance; Colour photographs of every piece including some different views; Notes of similar or related pieces in other collections; Concordance with the 1932 catalogue; Catalogue of the Collection.…
