Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine condition. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dust jacket. NOT a library discard (illustrator). First Edition (so stated). New York: Random House, 2019. SIGNED by the AUTHOR (his signature only, NOT personalized to anyone). Near Fine condition in a bright and shiny Near Fine dust jacket. NOT price clipped ($28.00). The jacket is only very lightly rubbed. NO chips or tears. NO fading. Sharp corners. Mild bump to top edge but NO text or illustrations are affected. NOT a library discard. NO owner's name. NOT a remainder. Pages are clean and unmarked. First printing with "First Edition" so stated and complete number row (246897531) centered on the copyright page. Jacket praise from Bill Gates, Serena Williams, SECDEF Robert Gates, Mark Cuban and Admiral William McRaven. Bound in the original two-tone blue boards, stamped in bright silver on the spine. From the dust jacket: "From the longtime CEO and chairman of Starbucks, a bold, dramatic work about the new responsibilities that leaders, businesses, and citizens share in American society today -- nas viewed through the intimate lens of one man's life and work. What do we owe one another? How do we channel our drive, ingenuity, even our pain, into something more meaningful than individual success? And what is our duty in the places where we live, work, and play? These questions are at the heart of the American journey. They are also ones that Howard Schultz has grappled with personally since growing up in the Brooklyn housing projects and while building Starbucks from eleven stores into one of the world's most iconic brands. In FROM THE GROUND UP, Schultz looks for answers in two interwoven narratives. One story shows how his conflicted boyhood -- including experiences he has never before revealed -- motivated Schultz to become the first in his family to graduate from college, then to build the kind of company his father, a working-class laborer, never had a chance to work for: a business that tries to balance profit and human dignity. A parallel story offers a behind-the-scenes look at Schultz's unconventional efforts to challenge old notions about the role of business in society. From health insurance and free college tuition for part-time baristas to controversial initiatives about race and refugees, Schultz and his team tackled societal issues with the same creativity and rigor they applied to changing how the world consumes coffee. Throughout the book, Schultz introduces a cross-section of Americans transforming common struggles into shared successes. In these pages, lost youth find first jobs, aspiring college students overcome the yoke of debt, post-9/11 warriors replace lost limbs with indomitable spirit, former coal miners and opioid addicts pave fresh paths, entrepreneurs jump-start dreams, and better angels emerge from all corners of the country. FROM THE GROUND UP is part candid memoir, part uplifting blueprint of mutual responsibility, and part proof that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. At its heart, it's an optimistic, inspiring account of what happens when we stand up, speak out, and come together for purposes bigger than ourselves. Here is a new vision of what can be when we try our best to lead lives through the lens of humanity." . SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Edition (so stated). Hardcover. Near Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xiii, 353pp. + 16 pages full color photos. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First edition. First printing [stated]. xv, [3], 350 pages. Illustrations. Bookplate signed by Schults on fep. Tribute. Photo Credits. Index. In 2008, eight years after stepping down as Starbucks' CEO, Schultz returned to oversee the company's operations during a moment in history that left no company unscathed. "Onward" tells the the remarkable story of Schultz's return and the company's ongoing transformation. From Wikipedia: "Howard Mark Schultz (born July 19, 1953) is an American businessman and writer. He is best known as the chairman and CEO of Starbucks and a former owner of the Seattle SuperSonics. Schultz co-founded Maveron, an investment group, in 1998 with Dan Levitan. In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked Schultz as the 354th richest person in the United States, with a net worth of $1.5 billion. After graduating, he worked as a salesperson for Xerox Corporation. In 1979 he became a general manager for Swedish drip coffee maker manufacturer, Hammarplast. In 1981, Schultz visited a client of Hammarplast, a fledgling coffee-bean shop called Starbucks Coffee Company in Seattle which he joined as the Director of Marketing a year later. On a buying trip to Milan, Italy for Starbucks, Schultz noted that coffee bars existed on practically every street. He learned that they not only served excellent espresso, they also served as meeting places or public squares; they were a big part of Italy's societal glue, and there were 200, 000 of them in the country. On his return, he tried to persuade the owners (including Jerry Baldwin) to offer traditional espresso beverages in addition to the whole bean coffee, leaf teas and spices they had long offered. After a successful pilot of the cafe concept, the owners refused to roll it out company-wide, saying they didn't want to get into the restaurant business. Frustrated, Schultz started his own coffee shop in 1985, named 'Il Giornale' after the Milanese newspaper. Two years later, the original Starbucks management decided to focus on Peet's Coffee & Tea and sold its Starbucks retail unit to Schultz and Il Giornale for $3.8 million. Schultz renamed Il Giornale with the Starbucks name, and aggressively expanded its reach across the United States. Schultz's keen insight in real estate and his hard-line focus on growth drove him to expand the company rapidly. Schultz did not believe in franchising, and made a point of having Starbucks retain ownership of every domestic outlet. Schultz authored the book Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time with Dori Jones Yang in 1997. His second book Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life Without Losing Its Soul with Joanne Gordon, was published in 2011. On January 8, 2008 Schultz regained his status as CEO of Starbucks after an eight-year hiatus. At this time, Schultz was earning a total compensation of $9, 740, 471, which included a base salary of $1, 190, 000, and options granted of $7, 786, 105. Schultz is a significant stakeholder in Jamba Juice." Also from Wikipedia: "Starbucks Corporation is an American global coffee company and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 20, 366 stores in 61 countries, including 13, 123 in the United States, 1, 299 in Canada, 977 in Japan, 793 in the United Kingdom, 732 in China, 473 in South Korea, 363 in Mexico, 282 in Taiwan, 204 in the Philippines, and 164 in Thailand. Starbucks locations serve hot and cold beverages, whole-bean coffee, microground instant coffee, full-leaf teas, pastries, and snacks. Most stores also sell packaged food items, hot and cold sandwiches, and items such as mugs and tumblers. Starbucks Evenings locations also offer a variety of beers, wines, and small bites after 4pm. Through the Starbucks Entertainment division and Hear Music brand, the company also markets books, music, and film. Many of the company's products are seasonal or specific to the locality of the store. Starbucks-brand ice cream and coffee are also offered at.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Rainer Hosch (Jacket photograph) (illustrator). xiii, [1], 352, [2] pages. Illustrations (most in color). Index. Signed by the author on a bookplate on the front free endpaper. Howard D. Schultz (born July 19, 1953) is an American businessman, author, and philanthropist. He served as the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Starbucks Coffee Corporation for more than two decades; first from 1986 to 2000, and then from 2008 to 2017. After stepping down as CEO, Schultz stayed at the company from 2017 to 2018 as its executive chairman overseeing Starbucks's philanthropic and charitable giving arm. Born and raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York, Schultz graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1975. Coffeehouse startup Starbucks onboarded him as their marketing and operations head in 1982. A business trip to Milan, Italy and the country's coffee culture inspired him to open Il Giornale, a specialty coffeeshop that merged with Starbucks during the late-1980s. Shultz pushed the new company to sell more than coffee beans and equipment, quickly establishing a large network of stores that served espresso, coffee, teas, and casual food. Following large-scale distribution deals-particularly with major hotels, groceries, and bookstores-Starbucks became the largest coffeehouse chain in the world. Shultz took the company public in 1992 and used a $271 million valuation to double their store count in a series of highly publicized coffee wars. He stepped down in 2000 to focus on Starbucks' international expansion. He authored three business books, Pour Your Heart Into It (1997), Onward (2011), and From the Ground Up (2019). Howard Schultz shares a uniquely American journey that begins in the public housing projects of Brooklyn, and leads to the boardroom of one of the world's most admired companies. More than a memoir or a compilation of business lessons, it is a compelling story about how character and values can spur positive change in people's lives. Derived from a Kirkus review: The former CEO of Starbucks wants to give everyone a chance to be their best selves. Schultz reflects on his personal and professional journey "to try to answer a vital question of our time: What can we do to effect meaningful change and create the just, fair, and secure future we all desire?" He recounts successes, challenges, and failures as he pursued his goal of creating a profitable business that balances "seemingly competing priorities of humanity and prosperity." Schultz envisioned Starbucks as more than a coffee shop: a place of respite and community where people would feel welcomed, a "third place," he calls it, not home or work but rather an escape from both. Schultz wanted to give his employees respect, fair pay, and benefits such as health insurance, stock options, and, eventually, tuition reimbursement. Starbucks, he hoped, would become known "as a great place to work" as well as a place "that fostered human connection over great coffee." The author comes across as a sensitive observer of injustice and a "common-sense" problem-solver open to innovative ideas. In 2014, after the deaths of Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin, for example, he began to ask himself "what the tragic deaths, court rulings, and uprisings revealed about the plight of black people in America today." As a white, wealthy male, he wondered, "Where had I been?" His response was to mount an initiative called Race Togetherâ"a message featured on Starbuck cups and discussed in open forumsâ"which, he was surprised to discover, generated "biting headlines" and satirical jokes. Nevertheless, he believes his decision to focus on race embodied the company's values "of trying to uphold human dignity by fostering civil conversation about complex topics." Other initiatives include college mentoring, job creation for veterans and refugees, and philanthropic giving from the author's family foundation. Optimism about America from a man mulling his next expression of civic responsibility. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
