First Edition
Full-Leather. Condition: Good. First Edition. Contemporary or near contemporary panelled smooth brown calf, gilt spine titles and border accent on red morocco field, with five raised bands. Leather boards with generally moderate wear, spine rub, small circular area of missing calf. Leaves very good; light natural toning, discoloration. Few with light crease, cutting error, heavy typesetting, and with text somewhat angled. Bind remains very good with all pages firmly intact. Bind good, intact; hinges reinforced. A true antique rarity of intriguing material. Very stylish and interesting old ink signature and details at front endpaper: "Richard Bylden, his book bought at Maidstone 25 June 1708" Below this is an additional near ancient cryptic inscription inked in Latin. Finally, the initials "A.D" inked to the front end papers and upper margin of page 181. This volume is arranged in three books, or sections. Books I and II with continuous pagination. Book II commences with 161, but is incorrectly numbered 181. The numbering thereafter is correct to end of Book II at page 356. Book III begins with new pagination, 1 to 176. Full title: "The Elements of History. From the Creation of the World, To the Reign of Constantin the Great. Containing the History of the Monarchies in a New Order and Method. Together with a View of the Contemporary Kingdoms and Commonwealths. And, A Brief Account of Their Magistracies and Politick Constitutions. Done for the Use of Young Students. By William Howel, LL. D. Translated from the Latin. London: Printed for R. Wellington at the Dolphin and Crown, the West-end of St. Paul's Church-yard : A. Bettesworth at the Red Lion on the London-Bridge : And B. Lintott at the Middle-Temple-Gate, Fleet Street. 1700." An excellent introduction and very digestible material after realizing that the type-set letter "s" are most often appearing more similar to the letter f; this was the case in this era with all English volumes. The buried, little spoken of, and forgotten lands of Scythia, Media, Sufiland, and Tartary are each referenced in the first couple pages. Two page advert with brief title summaries precedes title page. Handy volume measures apprx. 4 3/4" x 7". Pages (22), 1-160, 181-356, and 1-176p. Insured post. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
