Hoyle, Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge University, was on the staff of both the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories. He also wrote some science fiction, though this work (along with his earlier "Nature of the Universe" and "Frontiers of Astronomy") falls more into the category of "popularizing science."
