These charters provide precious documentation for the evolution of Anglo-Saxon law during this period, and allow insights into the political, soc…ial and economic affairs of early English society. Each charter is presented in Latin with a corresponding English translation and detailed scholarly commentary. The charters collected in this book are highly varied. The earliest examples come from the kingdom of Kent where Christianity had re-established after being brought by Saint Augustine, and, inevitably, these reflect the influence and Law of the Late Roman Empire. However, it quickly became apparent that while religious beliefs were aligned with Rome, the same was not the case with legal practices. Charters that come later after the influence of the Church had taken hold of the entirety of Anglo-Saxon England provide deep and rich evidence of how the convergence of Anglo-Saxon traditional legal customs with ecclesiastical law, Roman law, and canon law slowly produced the foundations of the English Common Law system.
