This book narrates the history and analyzes the evolution of the duel in France from its inception in the feudal era to its eventual decline at the end of the 18th century. The author explores the complex relationship between the duel and the broader social, political, and legal landscape of France, examining how the practice reflected and shaped the nation's cultural values and legal system. The book delves into the legal and social conflicts surrounding dueling, shedding light on the inability of state authorities to suppress it. The analysis goes on to highlight the efforts of the French monarchy to assert control over the practice, culminating in the establishment of a specialized tribunalâ"the Tribunal des Marà chaux de Franceâ"tasked with adjudicating disputes involving matters of honor. The insights provided in this book deepen our understanding of the duel's significance, not only as a historical phenomenon but also as a lens through which to explore the intricate interplay between law, custom, and society in pre-revolutionary France. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. These charters provide precious documentation for the evolution of Anglo-Saxon law during this period, and allow insights into the political, social and economic affairs of early English society. Each charter is presented in Latin with a corresponding English translation and detailed scholarly commentary. The charters collected in this book are highly varied. The earliest examples come from the kingdom of Kent where Christianity had re-established after being brought by Saint Augustine, and, inevitably, these reflect the influence and Law of the Late Roman Empire. However, it quickly became apparent that while religious beliefs were aligned with Rome, the same was not the case with legal practices. Charters that come later after the influence of the Church had taken hold of the entirety of Anglo-Saxon England provide deep and rich evidence of how the convergence of Anglo-Saxon traditional legal customs with ecclesiastical law, Roman law, and canon law slowly produced the foundations of the English Common Law system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
