Hardback. Condition: Good. First Thus. [55], 2-649pp, [10]. Contemporary full tree calf, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, Greek key rolled border to covers. Spine rubbed, spine ends chipped with small amounts of loss, including half of the head band, splits to outer joints but holding well, corners bumped and worn, a few minor scrapes to covers. Internally some off setting from plates as usual, occasional light browning, especially to plates, and some light foxing, but generally fairly clean. A subscriber's copy, Robert C. Broadley, with the subscription receipt bound in and signed by Hunter. With an engraved frontispiece portrait of Evelyn by F.[rancesco] Bartolozzi (see Alexander, 'A Biographical Dictionary of British and Irish Engravers, 1714-1820', pages 87-90), thirty-nine engraved plates (one folding), mainly by J.[ohn] Miller, [Muller, Johann Sebastian], (see Alexander, pages 619-621), with one by Thomas Nivares, and another by A. Rooker (probably Michael 'Angelo' Rooker, see Alexander, pages 765-766), after S.[amuel] H.[ieronymous] Grimm, and a folding letterpress table to rear. The first Hunter edition of Evelyn's 'Sylva', which was first published in 1664. The second edition of Hunter's version saw the addition of Evelyn's 'Terra', which had first been printed in the 1679 third edition of 'Sylva'. Henrey 137; Keynes 47; Nissen BBI 615; Pritzel 2766; and see Raphael, 'An Oak Spring Sylva', 33. WITH Evelyn's 'Terra: A Philosophical Discourse of Earth', also edited by Hunter, and published in 1787, [9], 2-74pp, [14], with a sepia aquatint frontispiece of 'The Tartarian Lamb' by J.[oseph] Halfpenny (see Alexander, op cit, page 412), and one folding table, in original paper covers. Upper cover detached, title browned, otherwise fairly clean, and now housed in a morocco backed drop back box, with the later Evelyn book label. Keynes notes that "this was published simultaneously with Hunter's second edition of 'Silva', 1786, and was evidently intended to be for the satisfaction of the purchasers of the first edition, which did not contain it" (it had been intended to be added to the 1776 edition of 'Silva', but it was not ready). Keynes 98 Size: Folio. Bartolozzi, F. And Miller, J. (illustrator). Signed by Editor.…
