This is the first edition of the author's first novel. The diary of one year in the life of Dame Alice Lisle who was executed for treason in 1685. This is an aoutstanding historical reconstrction f the year 1674 and offers an intimate insight into the character of Dame Alice, the daily domestic round and the turbulent changes that were taking place in England at the time. The diary abounds with delightful descriptions of the countryside and captures the pace of life at the time. The author Vesper Hunter, lived in Dame Alice's house, Moyles Court near Ringwood in Hampshire for many years and during this time came to know and love Dame Alice. Unable to accept that dry historians and lawyers could dismiss Dame Alice as guilty and rightly condemned, the author has recreated a year of Dame Alice's life. The intimacy with which this has been accomplished leaves the reader in no doubt as to the true nature of Dame Alice. Perhaps the hauntingly realistic quality that shines through is partly due to the fact that as well as sharing the same home and position 300 years apart, the author and Dame Alice also share the same birthdate.
