4to; laminated pictorial boards; pictorial endpapers; pp. ix + (i) + 158; line drawings throughout. Lamination lifting slightly at joint of upper board. Near-fine condition. The author's third book. 'I was asked by my publisher to write down in essence what I saw as being a "Veld Sketchbook". Well, I see it as being a collection of writings and drawings of my contact with the veld. Very much a personal response to Nature. An outlook influenced by one man. A text seeking to avoid what can be found in other books. The careful avoidance of exaggeration and careful explanation of what may sometimes appear to be exaggeration When you go for a long walk in the veld you come across an interesting tree, then a common butterfly and later some old friend of the tree-tops; a familiar bird that you have known since childhood. I think you will find some of them in these pages.' J.H. 1990. Jeff Huntly, whose Veld Sketchbook column was enjoyed by thousands of readers, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2008. He was a wonderful, humble man, who loved all features of the natural world, from tiny cryptic invertebrates to elephants and baobabs.
