Single sheet (4 4/8 x 3 inches). Asymmetrical floriated rococo cartouche surrounding Lowell's crest of right hand holding three downward pointing arrows, with his motto "Occasionem cognosce" (recognise the opportunity) in a ribbon banner beneath, and his copperplate name below all, engraved by Nathaniel Hurd, signed by him in the plate lower right. Lowell was a prominent politician and judge, from Newbury, Massachusetts, with a large legal practice in Boston, specialising in criminal law and what has been described as a lucrative trade in privateering cases. He was a member of Congress, a founding member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1780), a member of the American Philosophical Society, the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians, the Massachusetts Charitable Society, and the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, deputy grand master of the Freemasons' Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, a fellow of the Corporation of Harvard College, a founder of the Massachusetts Bank, and a director of the Boston branch of the Bank of the United States. "In politics, Lowell was associated with the Essex Junto, which long dominated Federalist politics in eastern Massachusetts. In 1789 Lowell became a judge in the newly created federal court for the district of Massachusetts. In 1801 with the passage of the Judiciary Act he became chief justice of the First Circuit, which included Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, as one of the "midnight judges." The Jefferson administration promptly repealed the act, Judge Lowell left the law, and died shortly thereafter at Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he maintained a large residence [with a library - Ed.]" (Edward W. Hanson for ANB). Hurd, the celebrated silversmith and engraver, was born in Boston, the son of Jacob Hurd, the "leading Boston silversmith of his era" (Ward). Although probably originally apprenticed to his father, by 1760 he was "working independently at his own shop on the Exchange in Boston, where "he continues to do all sorts of Goldsmith's Work" and "Likewise engraves in Gold, Silver, Copper, Brass, and Steel, in the neatest manner, and at reasonable Rates" (Boston Gazette, 28 Apr. 1760). In his brief career, Hurd produced a significant body of silver objects, including hollowware and flatware, of which more than two dozen examples survive. Many are embellished with fine coats of arms and other heraldic devices, testimony to his skill as an engraver. Hurd is most noted for his substantial body of engraved work, including bookplates (depicting more than fifty-five coats of arms and known in more than 110 varieties and states), seals and dies, trade cards, bills, portraits, provincial currency, and a view of the Boston courthouse. His activity earned him a position as one of the most important printmakers and printsellers in prerevolutionary Boston. He cut seals for the Boston Marine Society (1754), Brown University (1765), and Dartmouth College (1773), and he engraved bookplates and other items for Harvard College. His bookplates, made for prominent families in Boston, New Hampshire, and elsewhere in New England, are generally considered to be his best work and constituted a significant share of his business. Although some examples are in earlier styles, most of his bookplates are in a baroque rococo mode featuring an asymmetrical cartouche surrounded by foliate decoration, C-shaped scrolls, flowing banners, and other exuberant decoration" (Gerald W. R. Ward for ANB). French 51; Allen 520.
