In 1948 the RAAF formed Citizen Air force fighter squadrons in the main capital cities as an integral part of Australia's air defence. Made up of a mix of regulars and Part-Timers, these CAF squadrons successfully operated Mustangs, Vampires and Meteors for over a decade, providing an important contribution to Australia's defence. However, in 1960 flying ceased in the CAF when the RAAF could not afford to replace ageing aircraft. The CAF significantly reduced in size amnd were downgraded from "operational" to "auxiliary". In 1981 the CAF became the RAAF Active Reserve with more squadrons and people.

In June 1950, No. 77 Squadron RAAF was in Japan, packed up ready to go home, instead they went to Korea, flying Mustang fighters as part of a UN force aiding South Korea to fight invading communists from the north. Early flights helped hold the crucial Pusan Perimeter, after which they moved north to fight both the enemy and the deep cold of the Korean winter. Their deeds warranted lasting fame, instead they became the Forgotten Few of a largely forgotten war; those who read this book wi find they deserve better than that.

Pages browning, a little wear on edges else very good. In June 1950, No 77 Squadron RAAF was in Japan, packed up and ready to go home. Instead, they went to Korea, flying Mustang fighters as part of a UN force aiding South Korea fight invading communists from the north. Early flights helped hold the crucial Pusan Perimeter, after which they moved north to fight both the enemy and the deep cold of the Korean winter. When Chinese MiG-15 jet fighters entered the war the squadron re-equipped with twin-jet Meteors. The MiGs were controlled by Russian fighter experts who targeted the Meteors, driving them out of 'MiG Alley'. Adopting ground attack with rockets as their main role, they still fought MiGs, ending the war with a five-all draw. It was valuable but very dangerous work and squadron pilots faced a one in four chance of death or capture for much of the war. This action-packed account tells of the men of the RAAF's No 77 fighter squadron, the only RAAF squadron to take part in the Korean War; initially with propeller driven World War II vintage mustangs which were replaced by meteor jet fighters when the Chinese, with their MiG 15s, entered the war. Draws on first-hand accounts.

"Sales/posting to the USA suspended". Card covers 137pp b&w and colour photos. Light wear to card edges; a near fine copy. Laddie Hindley's air adventures cover 40 years in Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea, flying fighters, transports and finally helicopters. He accumulated 18000 flying hours, half of which were on the Jet Ranger. Most of his flying was demanding and exposed Laddie to hazardous conditions in mountainous terrain, tropical jungles and police activities in the PNG highlands. His experiences, as told to Doug Hurst, make compelling reading. Covers wartime service on Kittyhawks with No 80 Squadron RAAF during the assault on Japanese forces at Tadji in 1944, helicopter operations in Malaysia and South Vietnam (with 9 Squadron) and post war work operating commercial helicopters in perilous terrain at the Ok Tedi mine in PNG from the late 1960s through to 1980.

"Sales/posting to the USA suspended". Hard cover dust wrapper, 162pp, b&w and colour photos, ribbon book marker. Inscribed by author to former owner at top of title page; a very good copy. In 1967 Canberra bombers from 2 Squadron RAAF were sent to Phan Rang air base in South Vietnam as part of the Australian contribution to the Vietnam War. Using the Magpie call sign, they first operated at height but soon switched to concentrate on low-level bombing. Many low-level aircraft were hit by ground fire but the tough Canberras took the punishment without losses. Then, on 3 November 1970, Magpie 91 disappeared without traceironically from a high-altitude mission well above the ground fire. Magpies in Vietnam describes Canberra operations in Vietnam up to and including the disappearance of Magpie 91 and then explains how a group of very determined veterans undertook a remarkable search and recovery effort. An experienced writer of RAAF history, former RAAF navigator Doug Hurst tells the story of 2 Squadron RAAF Canberra bomber operations in Vietnam with skill and compassion. His story is supported by outstanding photographs of the Canberra bomber and the operation to recover the remains of the downed Australian airmen. Now scarce.
