"In this lavishly illustrated book, Jane Newdick, who lives in an English country cottage with a wonderfully varied garden, takes the reader on a voyage of exploration through the different periods of flowers and gardens in British history. In Period Flowers she traces the different uses of flowers, the changing fashions in cultivation, and the "exoticke" imports. Ms. Newdick delves into the links with painting and other art forms and shows how the fashions and preoccupations of an age are reflected in all forms of interior, including floral, decoration. The handsome photographs in this book evoke the different feel of each period and are an inspiration for both the garden enthusiast and the flower arranger. They present a historical picture of the styles and fashions of flowers and gardens from the medieval to the Edwardian age. The arrangements in Period Flowers range from stunning re-creations of famous still life paintings to a simple vase of lilies in a medieval interior, providing an inspiration for readers to create their own designs, both in terms of garden and indoor arrangements. The book contains details on creating period items such as tussie mussies, garlands, lavender bottles, an Edwardian hat, or a peice of Jacobean topiary. Practical requirements are spelled out, including basic information on the likes and dislikes of particular flowers, and where a more available substituted can be used without affecting the period feel. Period design hints, advice on cultivation, and detailed instructions for sophisticated arrangements and simple posies are interwoven into a very usable and inspirational book. This book is a celebration of the place of flowers in all our lives and the continuity they express with times past. Readers will find their greater awareness of the history of flowers and gardens will enhance their enjoyment in growing and using flowers or simply gazing at blooms in a brilliant arrangement or a quiet garden." 152 pp. Including Index.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Heather Hurst (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page. The inscription reads simply 'For Eloise, Jane Rawlings, 2003, November.' The Eloise is Eloise Armen who was the literary executor and close friend of Eva Le Gallienne. I have a number of books that were previously owned by Ms. Armen, including a biography of Eva Le Gallienne that was dedicated to Ms. Armen, as well as signed and inscribed her. As you can see from the photos, the covers of the book are quite beautiful. Their design and the illustrations are by Heather Hurst. I'm looking for wear on the covers and not finding any. The gilt lettering is very bright. The corners and edges look terrific. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages throughout. The inside covers and end papers are a mapped design of Greece in the front and the Aegean Sea at the rear. The previous owner penciled in the words 'signed presentation copy to Eloise Armen' off the top edge of the first front end paper. There is no other penciling or writing of any kind to be found, with the exception of the author's signed inscription, anywhere in the book. There are no markings. There are no attachments. And I'm not seeing any creasing at all on any of the pages. Same goes for soiling, I can't find any at all. The pages are exceptionally clean. So this is a very beautiful book in very good condition. The dust jacket has a little bit of creasing off the top and bottom edges. There are no tears. The jacket is very clean. The white flaps are very clean as well. They are in very good shape (there is one speck of a spot) . The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'This is a woman's tail unlike any that is ever been conceived or written, and it contains, at the same time, the stuff of high art and bounding adventure. Inscribed by Author(s).
