1st p/b ed. Paperback trade, very good condition, black & white plates & drawings, minor edgewear. 326 pp. The 1996 discovery, near Kennewick, Washington, of a 9,000-year-old Caucasoid skeleton brought more to the surface than bones. Archaeologist David Hurst Thomas traces the ancient roots of the Kennewick Man controversy and lawsuit. This is the story behind the battle for Native American (Indigenous) identity, in particular regarding a law stating that the bones belonged to them. He records the conflicts between archaeologists and indigenous Americans - and shows how the two groups can better work together on archeological scientific research projects in the future.

" From the publisher's 'Advertisement': "From the introduction - ".it has been a Law with the Publishers, not to alter a single Letter, but to print the Work with the utmost Fidelity from the best preceding Edition, with the Author's own Orthography, and with his marginal Notes. The only Liberty taken, has been to use the Types of the present Day, instead of the old English Letter of the Time of Elizabeth."
