HUSS TO J. A. LOGAN *** Pierre J. Huss, former head of Hearst's International News Service in Berlin, who left Germany only a few weeks before Hitler declared war on us, tells some hair- raising stories that may not have been printed before. Moreover, he gives us a few more details about the Nazi leaders and their brutal devotion to schnapps, beer, ladies and blood-letting. Here, for example, are some of the things I never knew before read- ing "The Foe We Face": That Hitler is a handy man with a pistol-from what Huss says about Der Fuehrer's ability to blast snowballs high in the air he is almost the equal of William S. Hart with a gun. That Hitler, according to his own words, is "one of the few all- round ballistic experts in the world." That Hitler had a secret love affair with a Fraeulein von Thorn, a petite brunette who wears bangs. That Hitler went to a floor show on the eve of the Nazi march into Poland. That Hitler has planned a great temple in the middle of Munich for his final resting place. ? The most interesting parts of Mr. Huss's book deal with the de- cision to attack Russia, the per- sonality and characteristics of Martin Bormann the blood- thirsty Nazi deputy leader whom Hitler named as his successor after Goering in place of Rudolf Hess, and with the Fuehrer's plans for his life after death. Huss says that Hitler an- nounced his decision to attack Russia to his secret inner council on Dec. 15, 1940, six months be- fore the actual beginning of hos- tilities. Mr. Huss makes it clear that he was not present, but he gives in direct quotation what he believes took place. The picture Huss gives of Bor- mann, persecutor of Catholics and Jews, is that of a violent gangster type, street-fighter and rough- houser. Very little has been printed in this country about Bor- mann, and Huss is helpful in de- scribing him. Hitler's plan to immortalize himself so that the world of 3000 will regard him as the world of 1942 regards Jesus, Moses and Mohammed is worth contem- plating. The blueprints, accord- ing to Mr. Huss, are in the vaults of the Fuehrer House in Munich. The idea is that the central railway station in Munich will give way to a great open square. Station, tracks, hotels, stores, buildings will vanish. A wide avenue would lead off the square straight through the city to the historic street down which Hitler and his Nazi followers marched in November, 1923, when they staged the beer-hall putsch that failed. In the exact center of the square a great mausoleum would be built forming the base for a column to rise 700 feet in the air. On top of that column a giant Nazi eagle would spread its wings no less than 225 feet. Inside this hollow column the sarcophagus of Hitler would stand on a high pedestal. Here amid flags, wreaths, eagles and burning torches, with steel-hel- mieted men who marched with Hitler, or their sons or grandsons, standing guard, Hitler would lie. Mr. Huss says that Hitler has not decided as yet whether to fol- low Lenin's example so that pil- grims might file by a glass aper- ture and see him. At any rate, in the mausoleum there will be exhibition rooms with the uni- forms, boots, hats, etc., the Fuehrer wore in his lifetime, with the water-colors he painted in his early days in Vienna. Such is Mr. Huss's description. From the looks of things now, from the determination in the hearts of hundreds of milions of people in the United Nations, the hotel and store keepers around Munich's railway station need not fear. For his crimes Hitler will get a more deserving resting place than the mausoleum Mr. Huss describes. Hitler himself, it seems, has a premonition of the fate awaiting him.
