The authors draw upon films of all eras and most film-making countries to show how motion pictures can be much more than just another way of telling a story. With unusual clarity and the help of film stills, revealing diagrams, and a "story board" from a major studio film, the authors illustrate the rich and complex means by which good films are made into special experiences of sight and sound. The reader is shown how a director creates tone and point of view so as to develop themes, establish values, and draw the viewer into the film. Dr. Silverstein is film editor of Salmagundi, a quarterly, and is an expert on James Joyce. Recently he spent a year in Poland at the request of the State Department, lecturing on film and American life and letters.
