The steamship S.S. Lion in the heavy gale hit the UK between the 13th and the 15th of October, 1881. As the accounts of the time report, between October and November of that year not less than 914 ships disasters occurred.The ship was transporting horses and it was supposed to sail between Sonning and London on the Thames, about 60km.The dramatic accompanying description reads: The General Steam Navigation Company: S.S. Lion during the heavy Gale of Oct. 13th, 14th, 15th on her Voyage from Sonning to London. The vessel to Windward is the Benbow of the same Comp.y which hove in sight on the night of the 15th when the ship was in a sinking state with her wheel gone.Signed and dated at bottom left: GG.
