This black and white, antique coastal survey was made by the United States Navy's Hydrographic Party. The surveys provide sailing instructions and notes on important characteristics of the area mapped. Depth readings, descriptions of bottom materials, light houses and important cities along the coast are identified on the survey. These charts show areas that have likely undergone significant changes due to modifications and recessions of coastal lands, making them fascinating to anyone interested in local geography and history. This coastal survey, produced in 1857, shows the entrance to Matagorda Bay and a sub-sketch of Lavaca Bay. Islands in the bay and lighthouses. Notes include remarks on the tides and on the accuracy of the soundings. This map measures 31.5 inches by 19 inches.
