Charles-Marie-Georges HUYSMANS est né à Paris le 5 février 1848, d'un père hollandais et d'une mère bourguignonne.Au moment où il commença d'écrire, le naturalisme était dans sa toute puissance et il en reçut une empreinte profonde, maisavec des modalités particulières. Dès ses débuts, il a le mépris et le dégoût de ce qui est laid et vulgaire, et il se complaît cependant à décrire la hideur physique et morale de la vie. Dans ses oeuvres s'étale un parti pris de platitude. Le découragement et le pessimisme s'y donnent libre cours. Réaliste par tempérament et mystique par aspiration, il demeureun grand artisan de l'observation directe et du trait imagé et satirique. Ses récits, ses confessions et ses critiquesdonnent l'idée d'un écrivain de premier plan, d'une originalité indéniable.
