The book has sold over 11 million copies as of 2000, more than any other mountaineering title. Ending with the stirring line "there are other Annapurnas in the lives of men" (in the context of the book, an exhortation to answer the challenges that life offers), the book gave an account of the expedition that established Herzogs climbing reputation and inspired a generation of mountaineers. Team members Louis Lachenal, Gaston Rebuffat, Lionel Terray, and Herzog) suffered severe frostbite, with consequent gangrene requiring the expedition doctor to perform emergency amputations in the field. Lachenal and Herzog, the summit climbers, lost all of their toes and Herzog most of his fingers.Annapurna was not climbed again until 1970, when the French north face route was climbed by a British Army expedition, simultaneously with an ascent of the south face by an expedition led by British climber Chris Bonington. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. "Annapurna: First Conquest of an 8000-Meter Peak (26,493 Feet)" by Maurice Herzog chronicles the historic French Himalayan Expedition's conquest of Annapurna in June 1950, marking the first successful ascent of an 8000-meter peak. This hardcover Book Club Edition, published in 1952 by E. P. Dutton, features blue boards adorned with a dark blue sketch illustration of Annapurna on the front cover, adding to its historical charm. While this edition is in Fair condition without a dust jacket, it still holds the allure of a monumental mountaineering achievement. The covers exhibit moderate to heavy wear, with corners showing signs of exposure and indentation to the spine ends. Additionally, bumped corners and light soiling on the boards contribute to its vintage character. Despite these imperfections, the binding remains square and tight, ensuring the book's structural integrity.Inside, the interior pages are clean and unmarked, preserving the narrative of Herzog's extraordinary expedition. Although light abrasion is present on the half-title page, it does not detract from the readability of the text.Your copy will be carefully packaged for shipment, ensuring protection from the elements. A complimentary USPS electronic tracking number will be provided, offering peace of mind as your book embarks on its journey to you. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Annapurna I is the name given to the 8,100-meter mountain that ranks among the most forbidding in the Himalayan chain. Dangerous not just for its extreme height but for a long and treacherous approach, its summit proved unreachable until 1950, when a group of French mountaineers made a mad dash for its peak. They became the first men to accomplish the feat, doing so without oxygen tanks or any of the modern equipment that contemporary climbers use. The adventure nearly cost them their lives.(Publisher).

"Herzog was a French alpinist most famously associated with the conquest of Annapurna in June 1950. This was the first 8000 metre peak to be climbed, a feat made more remarkable by the climbers' decision not to use supplemental oxygen during the climb. Although the climb was successful the descent became a two-week epic, from which Herzog narrowly escaped with his life.".
