Examining the ban on intercourse with foreign coutnries, the revolt of early Japanese Christians at Shimabara, cultural achievements in the Genroku era, reforms carried out int he Kyoho era, cultural upsurges in the Bunka and Bunsei eras, Commodore Perrys visit to Japan with his black ships, the opening of doors to foreign trade and the restoration of Imperial Rule, one cannot but pay special attention to the personal qualities of hte 15 successive shoguns who ruled this country during this period. The present speical issue of THE SUN is intended to shed some light on the personal aspects of the 15 shoguns, by introducing to the readers osme writings and drawings by them, which are dieesignated today as "national trasures" or "important cultural assets," and their personal effects. This is the first attempt of this kind in Japan at revealing some unknown phases of the history of the 15 shoguns of the Tokugawa period. Provided here as speical supplements to this issue are rerproductions of a writing by Ieyasu, the first shogun; the "Picture of a Monkey Showman" by Hidetada, the second shogun; and the "Folding Screen With Maps of Japan and the World," which Iemitsu, the third shogun, plaeced at his bedside.
