Troisième édition, abrégée et sans la carte et les fac-similé (Première éd. : trois volumes, Firmin-Didot, 1881-1882). L'ouvrage a obtenu le Prix Guizot de l'Académie française. Biographie, avec nombreux extraits de lettres et de documents. Thomas-Robert Bugeaud, Marquis de La Piconnerie (1784-1849) s'engage à 20 ans dans les Grenadiers à pied de la Garde impériale. Promu caporal à Austerlitz, il est Sous-Lieutenant puis Lieutenant au cours des Campagnes de Prusse et de Pologne (1806-1807). Capitaine en 1811, il combat en Espagne (1811-1813) et est Colonel à son retour en France. Il célèbre les Bourbons pendant la Restauration mais rejoint Napoléon pendant les Cent-Jours et combat les Autrichiens dans les Alpes. Licencié de l'armée à la Seconde Restauration, il adhère à l'opposition libérale, est élu député en 1831 et est nommé Maréchal de Camp par Louis-Philippe. Lors de l'insurrection parisienne d'avril 1834, il commande une des trois Brigades qui la réprime. En 1836, il est envoyé en Algérie pour à la fois combattre et faire la paix avec l'Emir Abd-el-Kader. Lieutenant-Général la même année, il signe avec ce dernier le Traité de Tafna en 1837 et est nommé Gouverneur Général en Algérie en 1840. Bien que peu favorable à l'extension de la conquête du pays, il s'y consacre entièrement, pratiquant la politique de la terre brûlée et se prononçant à la Chambre des Pairs contre le respect des règles humanitaires pour que la guerre en Afrique ne se prolonge pas indéfiniment. Maréchal de France en 1843, il attaque le Maroc, qui aide Abd-el-Kader à poursuivre sa résistance, et vainc ses troupes sur l'oued Isly, près de la frontière, ce qui lui vaut le titre de Duc d'Isly. Il traque ensuite Abd-el-Kader, qui doit se rendre en 1847. Sa préoccupation constante en Algérie fut d'associer l'armée à la colonisation. Lors de la Révolution de février 1848, il reçoit le commandement de l'armée mais la Garde Nationale s'y oppose aussitôt, de sorte que Louis-Philippe le contraint à démissionner. Elu à la Constituante en automne, il est nommé Commandant en chef de l'armée des Alpes par Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte mais meurt du choléra en juin 1849. Henry Le Lorgne, Comte d'Ideville (1830-1887) fut Secrétaire d'Ambassade de 1859 à 1870, en Italie, en Saxe et en Grèce, et fut nommé Préfet d'Alger en 1873.
