Tras prestar servicio en el Pacífico como fotógrafo para el ejército de Estados Unidos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se trasladó a París en 1947. A lo largo de su vida, alternó la residencia durante largos periodos en Francia y Estados Unidos antes de establecerse definitivamente en París desde 1990 hasta su muerte, en 2016.A caballo entre estas dos culturas, la obra de Stettner incorpora elementos de la fotografía callejera estadounidense y de la fotografía humanista francesa. Formado en la escuela neoyorquina de la Photo League, aprendió con Sid Grossman y fue un gran amigo de Weegee.
