Ignace Chappe avait fait imprimer, à ses frais, par Crapelet à Paris, en 1824 son Histoire de la télégraphie. En 1840, son frère Abraham enrichit cet ouvrage s'une longue introduction de 108 pages et d'une planche supplémentaire. Cette nouvelle édition est composée des ajouts d'Abraham, imprimés au Mans par Richelet et du stock restant des feuillets imprimés en 1824 par Crapelet. Ceci explique la pagination qui commence à 17 pour le texte de l'histoire, les 16 premières pages (titre et introduction d'Ignace) ayant été remplacés dans cette nouvelle édition. Cette édition, du fait de sa composition, est donc nettement plus rare que l'édition originale de 1824. Mis au point en 1791 par Claude et Ignace Chappe, ce procédé de communication fut adopté par l'Assemblée nationale et mis en oeuvre dès 1794 sur la ligne Paris-Lille. Ancêtres des télécommunications modernes, ce procédé révolutionna le mode de transmission de l'information et la famille Chappe ne cessa de perfectionner son procédé au fil des ans.
