Später kgl. preußischer Chargé d'affaires in Lissabon und Neapel, ging er 1831 als Geschäftsträger in die Schweiz und wurde später Geheimer Legationsrat im Kultusministerium in Berlin. 1836 in die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina aufgenommen, wurde er drei Jahre später auf Empfehlung von Wilhelm und Alexander von Humboldt zum Generaldirektor der Kgl.
