Hauptwerk des Schweizer Reformpädagogen Ignaz Thomas Scherr (1801 - 1870), der als Pionier des Zürcher Volksschulwesens gilt und über Zürich hinaus maßgeblichen Anteil an der Herausbildung eines modernen Schulwesens in der Schweiz hatte. 1832 zum Direktors des neu gegründeten Lehrerseminars in Küsnacht gewählt, reformierte Scherr das ihm unterstellte Volksschulwesen, machte sich damit aber sowohl den Klerus, der bis dahin die Schule kontrolliert hatte, als auch die ortsansässigen Fabrikanten, denen das von Scherr geforderte Verbot der Kinder- und Nachtarbeit widerstrebte, zum Feind. Von seinen Gegnern schließlich aus dem Amt gedrängt, eröffnete er 1843 in Winterthur ein Privatinstitut für Taubstumme und eine vorbereitende Schule zum Hochschulstudium für Knaben. Da sich im Kanton Zürich inzwischen die Verhältnisse zu Gunsten eines freieren Bildungswesens geändert hatten, konnte Scherr hier bis zu seinem Tode an der Verwirklichung seiner Ideen weiterarbeiten. Condition: Gut. Unter der Abbildung faksimilierter Schriftzug, 5 Zeilen u. Unterschrift (I.Th. Scherr.). - Ignaz Thomas Scherr ( 1801-1870 Zürich) war ein Schweizer Pädagoge. Nach kurzer Tätigkeit als Elementarlehrer wurde Scherr 1821 in Gmünd als Gehörlosen- und Blindenlehrer angestellt. 1825 übernahm er die Leitung des Blindeninstituts in Zürich. Scherr gründete eine Taubstummenanstalt und verband sie mit dem Blindeninstitut; beide Anstalten zeigten unter seiner Führung bedeutende Erfolge. Er schrieb Lehrbücher und Lehrpläne, beteiligte sich an der Volksschulreform und an der Ausarbeitung eines neuen Volksschulgesetzes. - Gutes Exemplar.
