Ihde places scientific discoveries within their broader intellectual, economic, and social settings and discusses the development of organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and industrial chemistry. Illustrated throughout, with a frontispiece after Jacques-Louis David's portrait of Antoine Laurent Lavoisier and his wife. 851 pages. A major twentieth-century reference work in the history of chemistry and one of Ihde's best-known publications. Condition: Hardcover volume is solid and internally clean in the pages examined, with general age and handling wear. Brief ink inscription, "To Ollie," on the front endpaper. Page edges show some age toning and light soiling. Original dust jacket is present but considerably worn, with chipping and losses along the upper edge and spine ends, including a larger loss at the upper left front panel/spine area. Additional edgewear, short tears, rubbing, and small chips along folds and corners. Rear panel shows foxing/spotting and general surface soiling.
