Georg, "der Bärtige" (1471 Dresden - 1539 ebd.) Herzog zu Sachsen; wünschte anfänglich eine Kirchenverbesserung, empfand jedoch die Lehre Luthers als zu radikal und lehnte diese deshalb ab. Die Anhänger Luthers wurden von ihm mit Verbannung, Kerker und Todesstrafe verfolgt. Martin Luther verfasste eine Schmähschrift "Apostolus diaboli" gegen den sächsischen Kurfürsten. Den Spitznamen "der Bärtige" erwarb er sich deshalb, weil er sich nach dem Tode seiner Gemahlin den Bart wachsen ließ.
