After failing the entrance examination for the University of Adelaide, he managed to get into Magdalen College, Oxford, from which he graduated a B.A. in 1914, Dip. Ed. in 1915 and M.A. in 1919. He represented Magdalen in cricket, tennis, hockey, lacrosse and rowing.
