Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Thus. 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' is a collection of illustrated poems. They appeared in two phases, a few first copies were printed and illuminated by Blake himself in 1789, five years later, he bound these poems with a set of new poems in a vol…ume titled 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul'. This is a new popular facsimile edition, inspired by the William Blake Trust, published in 1967. Some edge wear and slight chipping to top and bottom of largely brick red jacket and spine, corners rubbed and slightly bruised, spine slightly browned, some slight overall time staining, not price clipped (84s), small previous owner's bookplate to bottom ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age, unpaginated. Romantic poet and artist William Blake (1757-1827), juxtaposes the innocent world of childhood with the corrupt and repressed one of adults. Many of the poems are in pairs enabling the reader to see the same situation first from the perspective of innocence and then from that of experience. With colour facsimile plates of Blake's original illustrations. Quite a scarce book. Jacket and illustrations by the author (illustrator).

Contact seller3-star sellerHardcover. Condition: g to vg. Limited First edition. 1/1000. Quarto. XII, [1], 347, [1], VIII, [2], 386, [2]pp. Uncut and unopened copy. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth, with gold lettering to spines and front covers. Top edges gilt. Pictorial endpapers showing maps of Biblical periods. Color frontispiece and title vignett…e in each volume. From the author in her Preface: "The Bible is a difficult study, and many, in youth, are bewildered and turn aside for lack of guidance. Here, I have endeavored to select those parts which might properly become a child's first sacred book. In the first volume, the story of the Creation and verses describing and praising its wonders are followed by the lives of great heroes of old who sought to know God and to do his will. [.] The second volume opens with the Life of Jesus, made one account from the four gospels that he may be seen more vividly. The parables and the discourse of Jesus at the Last Supper are printed in italics to set them apart from the narrative. [.] I have taken many liberties with the Letters of Paul, selecting those passages which to me seem timeless, and arranging them by subject. This, it is hoped, will lead to a closer study of the epistles themselves. Many of the Psalms are here, arranged as hymns of praise and worship, psalms of reflection, and personal confession of faith. For those who are older, I have placed together the more philosophical and preceptual books, including Job, [.], and Jonah [.]. The commandments of Moses and of Jesus are repeated, as are God's covenants with his people." Binding of first volume is slightly age-toned on spine, and partly discolored on front cover (thus partly affecting gold lettering). Binding of first volume in overall good- to good, interior, binding and interior of second volume in very good condition.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Printed at the Ballantyne Press, London, UK. 1897. Illustrated with wood-engraved frontispiece, borders and initials. Limited to 210 copies. Bound in blue paper covered cloth with paper titles present to the spine and the front board. Boards have wear present to the extremities of… the boards. Previous owner's name present to the FFEP. Offsetting present to the endpapers. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The Book of Thel is a poem by William Blake, dated 1789 and probably composed in the period 1788 to 1790. It is illustrated by his own plates, and is relatively short and easy to understand, compared to his later prophetic books. The metre is a fourteen-syllable line. It was preceded by Tiriel, which Blake left in manuscript. A few lines from Tiriel were incorporated into The Book of Thel. Most of the poem is in unrhymed verse. William Blake (1757 1827) was a British poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. Blake proclaimed the supremacy of the imagination over the rationalism and materialism of the 18th-century. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. Charles de Sousy Ricketts RA (2 October 1866 7 October 1931) was a British artist, illustrator, author and printer, known for his work as a book designer and typographer and for his costume and scenery designs for plays and operas. EB; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall.
