Ako Fujiki (1896 -1943, Nihonga style) (illustrator). Imaoka Dzsúicsiró (Imaoka Juichiro, 1888 -1973): Picture postcard from Juichiro Imaoka to Dr. István Kiss (Tokyo, 1933) with Christmas and New Year's greetings in Hungarian. Dated: Tokyo (Japan), November 29, 1933. Sender's official address indicated as: Tokyo, gaimusho, obeikyoku, I-Ka (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, European and American Affairs Bureau, First Division). Addressed to: Dr. István Kiss, Chief Police Counselor of Budapest, and his wife ("Monsieur et Madame dr. Kiss István"). Delivery address: Budapest, District IX, 3 Viola Street, Hungary. (According to contemporary directories and archival records, the building was owned by Dr. István Kiss and also served as the headquarters for the editorial and publishing office of the Vendéglösök Lapja [Caterers' Journal]). Stamp: 1 piece, 1.5 sen face value, red, Showa-era Japanese postage stamp. Postmark: Tokyo postmark; the date portion of the cancellation mark is partially blurred. Front (Image): Color painting reproduction of the work titled Dancer (Dansa ) by Japanese painter Ako Fujiki (1896 -1943, Nihonga style). Condition: Minor flaws (scratches, creases) The document holds outstanding significance in the history of Hungarian-Japanese diplomacy and culture. It evidences Juichiro Imaoka's close, personal friendship with representatives of the Hungarian public administration following his nearly decade-long stay in Hungary (1922 -1931). The postcard highlights Imaoka's excellent command of the Hungarian language, as well as the fact that after returning to Japan, as an employee of the Tokyo Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Gaimusho), he actively cultivated his Hungarian connections, which later served as the foundation for official cultural rapprochement between the two countries. He originally arrived in Budapest in 1922, driven by the fervor of Turanism and the goal of proving the presumed Hungarian-Japanese (Ural-Altaic) linguistic kinship. After World War II, despite Cold War isolation, he worked tirelessly to rebuild these relations. He re-founded and served as president of the Japan-Hungary Friendship Society, which remained the primary organizer of cultural exchange programs. He was not only a linguist and diplomat but also a literary translator. Thanks to him, the Japanese public was introduced to the works of Sándor Petöfi, Mór Jókai, and Kálmán Mikszáth; moreover, he translated Imre Madách's magnum opus, The Tragedy of Man (Az ember tragédiája), into Japanese.
