Es entstand aus Protest gegen die faschistische Kriegsführung im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg, insbesondere gegen die Bombardierung der baskischen Stadt Guernica durch die »Legion Condor«, und ist bis heute im öffentlichen Bewußtsein der künstlerische Ausdruck des Protestes gegen den Krieg überhaupt. Max Imdahl beschreibt in diesem Band das Bild und seine Wirkung, sowohl in Hinblick auf das Dargestellte selbst als auch auf die besondere Darstellungsweise Picassos und seine unterschiedlichen stilistischen Phasen.
