If it is at 6.30 - (like the London theatres) both tea - dinner are out of the question - though supper after the performance would be very agreeable! If the perfomance is at 8 - I could come to tea at 4.30 - & have a little time to rest before it.' She will understand if her suggestions are 'impossible for you', but is 'none the less honored by you invitation to dine, which were I not working, I should be very happy to accept [.] dinner is almost impossible, a very sketchy meal before I go to the theatre'. If he would 'leave word at the Randolph Hotel' she will 'ask on arriving for a message'. She ends by expressing her pleasure 'to be coming to Oxford again'. From the papers of Sir David Ross.

Containing the methods of making . and improving a fruit and kitchen-garden . The four last parts treat of the manner of . adorning gardens; explaining the art of making and… disposing of parterres, arbours or greens, wood-works, arches, columns and other compartments proper for the most beautiful gardens and plantations. London, J. Tonson, 1717. 8vo. [16] + 432 + 8p. Engraved frontispiece by M. van der Gucht after L. Laguerre, 20 engraved plates, woodcuts in text. Contemporary decorative panelled calf; lower spine strengthened. A rich source of information on contemporary horticultural practice, and garden design much influenced by French models. London and Wise owned the celebrated Brompton Park nursery from circa 1688 to 1714, and supplied most of the large estates with plants and trees; the nursery was highly recommended by John Evelyn. Wise was 'master gardener'to Queen Anne, whilst London travelled the country giving advice on gardens including Chatsworth, Longleat and Castle Howard. The present work is advertised as a translation of two French works (those of François Gentil and Louis Liger) but with 'several alterations and additions proper for our English culture'. This second edition revised by Joseph Carpenter who became a partner in the nursery in 1714, gives more details of English practice, tree-planting schemes and fruit preferences than the first published 1706 edition, and is considered of more use to the real gardener. There is a list of fruits and catalogue of seeds available at the Brompton nursery. Among the attractive plates are several of parterres, allées and garden layouts with topiary and fountains; arbours and covered walks are illustrated in an elm-entwined portico and a 'gallery'of hornbeam (the text notes that the English would use lime). A handsome copy in contemporary binding, very faint toning only to one or two leaves. Henrey 990. See also David Green, Gardener to Queen Anne, 1958.

Add to basketCondition: Very good. - Octavo, 8 inches high by 5 inches wide. Two pages penned on the first and third pages of a folded sheet. Over 150 words penned by the radical minister William J. Potter addressed to a Mrs. Richmond regarding arrangements for a lecture he will give at the meeting of her club. After mentioning that she shou…ld expect him on the 5 p.m. train, as that is the earliest he can leave Boston for Lowell that day, he expresses his pleasure that she likes his latest essay: "I am glad if you have found so much to enjoy in my essay on 'The New Protestantism'" and, though he would be tempted to read it at the lecture he had "thought of reading a paper which I call 'Two Views of Tradition, - The Ecclesiastical & the Scientific.' And on the whole this seems to me more appropriate." Signed "Wm. J. Potter". In a postscript, Potter suggests that if Mrs. Richmond's not fully recovered her health by then, it might be better to postpone the meeting and he would then come later in the season. Folded several times for mailing with a small piece out from the bottom front corner of the second page. The Unitarian minister and Freethinker William James Potter (1829-1893) was a radical minister in the American Free Thought tradition of his era. Influenced by the Transcendentalists, he was later strongly influenced by Charles Darwin. Moving from his Quaker foundations to Unitarian Christianity and then towards free religion, Potter was a founder with David Atwood Wasson of the Free Religious Association (1867-1920). Potter drafted the Free Religious Association's constitution and eventually served as it's president: "The new society would dedicate itself to the emancipation of religion from the thralldom of irrational and traditional authorities." From 1859 to 1892, he served as the minister of the Unitarian Church in New Bedford (First Congregational Society). Potter was the poet Conrad Aiken's grandfather. In his autobiography "Ushant", Aiken says that his entire life was devoted to the ideas and work of Potter.

Add to basket4pp, 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded once. Addressed to 'J. H. Lorrimer [sic] Esq'. He begins emphatically: 'Dear Lorrimer [sic] | I wish to state clearly, that I do not Exhibit in the Paris Exn. next year and that you are not to try to get any Picture of mine to send there.!…!! | I think it necessary to write this, after yesterday's over-much talk on my part I think. My "ruminations and denunciations" may have led me into being less explicit than I ought to have been, and espescially [sic] that part where I expressed indifference as to pictures out of my possession, and where I might not be able to have control.' He was 'so glad' to see Lorimer that he 'may have thought too little of the business that brought you, it was Pat Adams mention of Chamberlains pictures &c. that made me think of this after you left'. He ends in the hope that Lorrimer 'got home all right'.
